Dear City of Santa Cruz Resident or Property Owner,

Did you know that as a property owner you are responsible for the maintenance and repair of your sewer lateral, the sewer pipe that goes from your house to connect to the main sewer pipe in the street?

In fall of 2017, the Public Works Department is proposing two significant changes to the Sanitary Sewer Ordinance for residents within the City of Santa Cruz City Limits. These changes aim to reduce the frequency of spills and leaks that pollute the environment. Changes are as follows:

  1. Any owner/occupant of a property with a sewer spill is responsible for stopping the spill immediately and will be subject to fines and penalties if inspections and repairs are not made in a timely manner.
  2. Prior to the sale of property, the property owner must have the sewer lateral inspected by an authorized inspector, and then make any needed repairs and submit an inspection form to verify compliance.

The Transportation and Public Works Commission will discuss these changes at their upcoming meeting:

July 17, 2017 meeting
City Hall Council Chambers
809 Center Street, 7 PM

Residents and property owners are encouraged to attend.
