Walking Adventure Group San Lorenzo River Walk

Join Coastal Watershed Council board member Mike Rotkin for a fun and informative walk along the San Lorenzo River! This walk is part of a fantastic summer series put on by the Walking Adventure Group, a program of the Downtown Senior Center at London Nelson Community Center. The walk will begin at the Chinatown Bridge (the pedestrian bridge over the river on River Street behind Trader Joe’s) and will feature an easy walking loop on paved terrain. Leashed dogs are welcome and parking is available at the meters on River Street.
About the Downtown Senior Center at London Nelson Community Center
The Downtown Senior Center offers a variety of classes, trips, and services for seniors ages 55 and up, as well as older adult classes for ages 45 and up. We offer both exercise and creative recreational courses to keep the mind and body active. We also offer day trips to museums, live shows, national parks, and cultural locations at special discounted prices. In addition, we occasionally host some special senior services that range from tax assistance to medical screenings. Our Downtown Senior Center also contains the Senior Computer Center, which offers a great diversity of computer classes, special interest groups, and volunteer help days to teach seniors the skills they need to stay current with today’s technology.

July 1: Moran Lake and East Cliff Loop- Kelly (dog-friendly)
Meet at Moran Lake County Park on East Cliff Drive. Our loop begins as a leafy jaunt through a county park, proceeds through a business district with cafes and shops, and ends with a spectacular seaside stroll. Roughly 2.5 miles, easy terrain. Leashed and friendly dogs welcome.
July 8: Moore Creek Preserve
Meet at the upper entrance to Moore Creek Preserve, at the end of (the private section of) Meder Street. Park at the intersection of Western Drive and Meder Street. We will walk to the end of the private road (with no public parking) to the park entrance, plan to walk 5-10 minutes from the cars to the entrance. Moderate terrain. Due to sensitive habitats, no dogs or bike allowed.
July 15: Upper Pogonip (dog friendly)
Meet at the Upper Pogonip entrance at the end of Spring Street, of High Street, Santa Cruz. Park along Spring Street- carpool if you can. We will hike Spring Trail and back. Easy terrain, approximately 3 mile work. Leashed dogs welcome.
July 22: Watsonville Slough Walk
Meet at the Nature Center (500 Clearwater Lane in Watsonville) to enjoy a tour of the wetlands trails. We will experience first-hand the beautiful birds and plants living in our local wetlands, and walk away knowing why and how to protect this unique habitat.
July 29: Coastal Watershed Council-led San Lorenzo River Walk
Meet at the Chinatown Bridge (the pedestrian bridge on River Street behind Trader Joe’s). Parking in the Trader Joe’s lots runs you the risk of getting ticketed or towed. Meters are available along River Street. We will enjoy another wonderful walk with Coastal Watershed Council staff along the Riverwalk and back. Leashed dogs welcome. Easy terrain.
BONUS WALK on Saturday, July 31st: Join our Urban Forester, Leslie Keedy for a Significant Tree Walk! Meet at Santa Cruz City Hall at 9:00am.
