River Health Day (replacing Salix Spectacular)

March 25, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

Willow planting efforts have been paused due to the discovery of nesting birds at the restoration site.

Coastal Watershed Council restoration efforts along the San Lorenzo River are guided by City staff, biologists and Fish and Wildlife permits. CWC has permission to plant native plants during bird nesting season, November to May. Taking extra precautions to measure the possible impacts of our planting efforts, a recent walkthrough of the willow planting area revealed a possible mallard nest. To protect the nesting birds, CWC has decided to shift its restoration efforts for Sunday, March 25. Accordingly, we will be working on maintaining and installing plants on the upper bank of the levee, removed from potential nesting bird activity. We will be installing beneficial natives like wild California rose, yarrow, and gumweed.

This event will be co-led by the California Conservation Corps Watershed Stewards Program.

Planting will occur along the Santa Cruz Riverwalk from Laurel Street and Soquel Avenue Bridge. Please meet here on the Santa Cruz Riverwalk adjacent to the Mimi De Marta Dog Park located at 119 Broadway in Santa Cruz. Parking is limited at the dog park so we recommend biking or walking to the site. Other parking options include Maharaja Restaurant parking here.

We recommend that all volunteers dress in comfortable gardening clothes, include long pants, socks and sturdy shoes. Bring sun protection or rain layer depending on the weather and be sure to bring a reusable water bottle. Volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

All volunteers must fill out the following waivers prior to the event. Save time by printing and bringing a signed waiver to the event.
