River Health Day: Coastal Cleanup Edition

September 16, 2017 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Pick up trash and make a difference in San Lorenzo River and the coastal ecosystem!

Every fall, the Coastal Watershed Council organizes habitat restoration events called River Health Days along the lower San Lorenzo River. At each event, volunteers learn about riverine habitat and take action to improve river health, removing invasives, planting native seeds and removing trash.

On September 16 from 9 to noon, the Coastal Watershed Council will be partnering with Save Our Shores on a special project for river health: Coastal Cleanup Day. Coastal Cleanup Day is the largest single-day clean up effort in the world!  As a volunteer you will help improve the river health and the health of our downstream ecosystems by removing trash and litter.

Trash nearby or in a river impacts water quality and the viability of aquatic ecosystems. Rivers like the like San Lorenzo are also conduits to the Monterey Bay. Join in the Coastal Watershed Council during Coastal Cleanup Day by volunteering along the San Lorenzo River in downtown Santa Cruz. Together we can protect our freshwater and saltwater ecosystems!

Volunteer and win prizes!

For every hour you volunteer at a River Health Day you will earn five River Health Day points. Rack up points at River Health Days from August through October and win awesome prizes like Patagonia gear, a gift certificate to Well Within and more. Points will be tracked by sign-ins at events.

Event check in will be at Mimi De Marta Park.
