River Health Day at Chinatown Bridge

August 11, 2018 @ 9:30 am - 12:00 pm

Make a difference in the San Lorenzo River ecosystem!

Join Coastal Watershed Council staff in making a difference in the lower San Lorenzo River. Volunteers will help with caring for native plants as they grow and create habitat along the river. While you are at the river, take a closer look at the willows, alders, evening primrose and mugwort native to the watershed. Listen to the calls of bushtit and warbler over the babble of the lower river. And learn about this unique river ecosystem.

During this special River Health Day, you will help CWC and City staff revitalize the Chinatown Bridge that connects San Lorenzo Park with River Street. This bridge marks the last site of Santa Cruz’s Chinatown. At this site, past volunteers have planted natives plants like sticky monkey flower, black safe and coffee berry. Mugwort, a native with numerous medicinal uses also grow prolifically in this area.  Now we need to return to the site to maintain plants and weed, water and mulch the garden.

We recommend that all volunteers dress in comfortable gardening clothes, include long pants, socks and sturdy shoes. Bring sun protection or rain layer depending on the weather and be sure to bring a reusable water bottle. Volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

This event will take place next to the Chinatown Bridge on the Santa Cruz Riverwalk across from Trader Joe’s. You can see the exact location here on Google Maps. Parking is available on River Street. Call 831 464 9200 for any questions about the event.
