Exploring the San Lorenzo River Series Tour: San Lorenzo Salmon
March 10, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

About this tour…
The San Lorenzo River was once one of the most popular steelhead and coho salmon rivers on the Central California Coast. Levee construction in the 1950’s and the growth of the City of Santa Cruz around the dynamic coastal stream changed the river’s profile dramatically. It also changed the functions and health of the river habitat. Despite that, the San Lorenzo River continues to sustain a small population of steelhead. Explore the river habitat in the heart of Santa Cruz and learn about how rainfall, geology and sediment, the levees and human behaviors support or challenge salmonid survival in our community. This tour will be led by Diana Baestcher, PhD candidate at the UC-Santa Cruz studying fish, population genetics and molecular ecology.
The tour will begin here at the parklet on the corner of River Street and Water Street, across from Wells Fargo.
