Can Steelhead Trout Migrate Here? (Distance Learning)
Grade: Third
Lesson Series Overview
Steelhead trout hatch in the San Lorenzo River, migrate to the ocean as an adult, and return to the San Lorenzo River to reproduce. Steelhead trout require a certain water level in order to safely migrate to and from the ocean. The highest period of steelhead trout migration is when the water level is highest in the San Lorenzo River. Students will learn about the unique life cycle of the steelhead trout and what steelhead require during their migration to survive. During the course of the program, students will examine seasonal weather patterns and water levels at the San Lorenzo River to determine when steelhead trout are likely to migrate. Students will learn about water conservation efforts and apply their knowledge to make a claim to a solution for how humans can maintain high water levels both during the rainy and drought season.
Supports Content Standards:
3-LS1-1. Develop models to describe that organisms have unique and diverse life cycles but all have in common birth, growth, reproduction, and death.
3-ESS2-1. Represent data in tables and graphical displays to describe typical weather conditions expected during a particular season.
3-LS3-2 Use evidence to support the explanation that traits can be influenced by the environment.
3-LS4-4. Make a claim about the merit of a solution to a problem caused when the environment changes and the types of plants and animals that live there may change.*

Lesson Series Materials
Students will be guided through a variety of hands-on activities, observations, writing and drawing assignments, and gain content knowledge by watching brief videos. Lesson activities are shared in hyperdocs which are documents that include instructions and links to the activities. Each of the seven lessons has their own individual hyperdoc which can be accessed from the below Teacher Lesson Overview Hyperdoc. You will also find supporting documents below as well.
