Harkins Slough

Clean Streams Monitoring Program

Harkins Slough, Watsonville

August 2008– June 2009

In a partnership with the Open Space Alliance (OSA), the Coastal Watershed Council is working with community volunteers to continue the Clean Streams Water Quality Monitoring Program in Harkins Slough, Watsonville. Volunteers are collecting quarterly water samples and performing water quality monitoring at 4 sites in this part of the Watsonville Slough system. Parameters being tested include: air and water temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen and turbidity. Laboratory analysis will include bacteria, nutrients and Biochemcial Oxygen Demand (BOD).

This is a great opportunity for Open Space Alliance and community members to learn more about Harkins Slough through participation in the program, as well as learning about the effectiveness of resource enhancement activities and habitat restoration conducted on adjacent farmland.

If you would like to join us in Harkins Slough please contact CWC - any one can join in even with the program in full swing. We'd love to have any interested parties get on board! It is a terrific opportunity to learn about water quality and our local slough system.
